How thick should a curtain wall be in a steel frame construction to meet all necessary reguations in the UK?
You're not getting very good answers here. I've never heard of a curtain wall made of concrete, that would be a cavity wall, same with masonry.
A steel curtain wall is sized typically for the weight of it's own materials, the appropriate component and cladding loads (wind), and any necessary connections based on seismic requirements in the building code.
Primarily curtain walls are a subcontractor designed or specified item, and the structural engineer of record does not get involved, besides trying to make sure his structural frame has enough tolerance or adjustment in it so the curtain wall can be constructed and the connections adjusted for when the wall is a little out of plumb, the structure is out of plumb, etc. Usually the architect will show connections to the structural steel on the Architectural drawings but indicated that the curtain wall engineer is to design for appropriate forces. The arch will then get a submittal for approval from the curtain wall engineer. There are fire code questions that are the responsibility of the Architect, loads / analysis ./ design of the curtain wall is either to the EOR or the curtain wall engineer, tolerances can fall between disciplines but on a taller building are quite important. If you allow 1/2" per floor, by the time you hit the twentieth floor, the wall is 10" out of alignment with the ground floor.
Most typically a curtain wall is nomenclature for a wall that is supporting only it's own weight. It relies on the structural frame (Steel in your question), to support it against wind/earthquake. Hence, 'how much weigth does it support' mentioned isn't a very relevant question.
To answer your question most directly, the thickness of a curtain wall has to do with appearance (arch), energy requirements (arch), wind loads (structural/curtain wall eng), height of the building (more about self weight than anything), seismic (again structural/curtain wall eng), building use, i.e. hospital (arch). Perhaps there are other items - fire code, building occupancy, local building codes, that might influence curtain wall thickness, as well as what thicknesses the curtain wall manufacturer makes - you're not going to want a 5 1/16" thick wall if it isn't already manufactured. Tolerances are an issue but should not affect the thickness of the wall, only how easy it is to construct, but I suppose if the buiding is very tall, the tolerances might be far enough out that the panel needs to be thickened to support it's own weight and what little bending is induced due to the lean of the wall out of vertical.
