Is there a notorious problem with putting snow chains on the ford flex?

A friend of mine couldn't put chains on a ford flex rental, due to the flex's low fender clearance and risk of the chains possibly cutting the brake lines. Any documentation of this via recall or etc?

The owners manual states that if you have 20 inch wheels you shouldn't use chains, if you have the smaller wheels you can use chains on the front wheels only.
