What is a great hybrid suv for reliability, price, utility and gas mileage?
I have a friend who is having car trouble. She knows nothing about cars and lives far from me, so I can't help her. She has a need to carry things at times, so a prius or small car won't work. She currently drives a chevy blazer but needs something now which will be good on gas.(don't we all?) Unless someone has a better idea I'm thinking of a hybrid suv. Which are the better choices? Something like a small to medium suv with great gas mileage and excellent reliability would be appreciated.
The Ford Escape Hybrid is quite good.
I live in New York City, and the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission has used Ford Escape Hybrids as taxi cabs for the past 3 years. If they can survive the punishment dished out by NYC cabbies, I'm sure it will survive your friend. 
The Escape Hybrid has the best fuel economy of all SUVs-- 32mpg combined city/hwy for the 2WD model.
BTW, the 2008 Escape Hybrid currently qualifies for a $3000 Federal Tax Credit when purchased new from a dealer. Sweetens the deal quite a bit.
