The Last Miles $17.98 “Cole does for Miles’s late work what Ian MacDonald’s Revolution in the Head does for the Beatles, examining each album in meticulous detail.” —Time Out“As with any good musical biography, Cole . . . made me think again about those albums such as Siesta, You’re Under Arrest, and The Man with the Horn that are now stashed in my attic.”—London Times“In the flurry of books since [Miles Davis’s] death, none has dealt in depth with the music of this period. Music writer George Cole fills this gap. . . . a rich and rewarding read.”—Gazette (Montreal)“A fascinating book.”—Mojo“A singular look into the last stage of Davis’s long, somewhat checkered career gained from various sources, which at the same time gives a picture of the modern music business.”—Midwest Book Review“There are large chunks of fresh material here. . . . Fill[s] in quite a few gaps and dismisses blanket condemnations of [Miles’s] pop phase.”—Jazzwise“Thank you for telling it like it was!”—Randy Hall, singer and guitarist“Very moving, emotional material.”—Gordon Meltzer, Miles’s last road manager and executive producer of Doo-Bop |

Miles, Mutants & Microbes $3.92 Two complete novels and a short novel in one large volume:pFalling Free--The Nebula Award-winning novel. Leo Graf was just your typical efficient engineer: mind your own business and do the job. But all that changed on his assignment to the Cay Habitat, where children had been bio-engineered to have four arms (and no legs) to function in zero gravity. Now that they're no longer needed, a heartless mega corporation is getting rid of them before they eat into the profit margin. Leo Graf adopted 1000 quaddies--now he had to teach them to be free.pLabyrinth--When Miles Vorkosigan is captured while on a secret mission to a lawless world, his only hope of escape is an unlikely pair of allies: a quaddie and a teenage werewolf.pDiplomatic Immunity-- Miles Vorkosigan and his wife were heading home for the births of their first children, but a major diplomatic disaster is looming at Graf Station, colonized by the descendants of the original quaddies, and duty calls. Unfortunately, diplomatic immunity doesn't carry over to immunity from a very nasty biological weapon. The downside of being a troubleshooter comes when trouble starts shooting back. . . .pStarring the explosively charismatic Miles Vorkosigan, this volume contains two complete novels (Falling Free and Diplomatic Immunity) and one short novel (Labyrinth), written by a Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author. |

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: LINES TO S. J. H. By Edward Miles Brown. Delicate fronded ferns, Carrying yourselves with a grace, Fragrant petals where burns The faintest flush of the face, Out of the cold and the snow Into my chamber brought, You come to convey me, I know, The breath of a beautiful thought. Sweet is your presence to me, But soon you must wither and fade, Yet out of your death shall be A fragrant memory made. A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF EDWARD MILES BROWN Read at the University by John Miller Burnam. EBENEZER LAKIN BROWN the father of Edward Miles Brown, was one of the pioneers of Kalamazoo County, Michigan, having emigrated from Plymouth, Vermont, to the little hamlet of Schoolcraft in 1831, only two years after the coming of the very first settlers. Mr. Brown had had limited opportunities for schooling, but for this lack he largely made up by his own diligent private study, his natural tastes and keen appreciation of literature. He acquireda good reading knowledge of Latin, which he maintained throughout life. His interest in educational matters is attested by the fact that he was at one time a regent of the University of Michigan. His Autobiographical Notes, written near the end of his long life of ninety years, have been brought out in the thirtieth volume of the Publications of the Michigan State Historical Society. These notes are valuable for the intimate picture they give of scenes and conditions prevalent in the West in the middle of the last century. His wife, Mary Ann Miles, was born in the village of Hines- burgh, not far from Burlington,Vermont. She came to Michigan about 1850, and for some time was a teacher in the Cedar Park Seminary at Schoolcraft, which at that time enjoyed a considerable reputation, and where she is said to have been a very successf... |

Miles to Go: The Lost Years $2.68 DIVTold by Chris Murphy, a young, down-on-his-luck, Irish-American guitarist who devoted himself to Miles Davis, first as his roadie and assistant, and then as one of his most trusted road managers, Miles to Go is a frank and intimate exploration of Davis’s eccentric working life, drug habits, paranoia, depression, and subsequent recovery. It also deals with Davis’s troubled relationship with his children and the controversial role Cicely Tyson played in his life. Murphy explores the dynamics that made Davis’s band work so well together, placing Davis’s work in a historic, literary, and musical framework. It corrects Davis’s own almost self-hating autobiography, and attempts to treat with some balance the rumors about Davis being bisexual and HIV positive upon his death. Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, and a very unlikely Mother Theresa all have walk-on parts in this engaging, intelligent, and often hilarious narrative that takes us from the small seedy jazz clubs that Davis was always at home in, to the world tours, and then finally to Davis’s triumphant return with his celebrated concerts at Lincoln Center in the early ‘80s. Eight pages of black-and-white photos are included./divDIVTold by Chris Murphy, a young, down-on-his-luck, Irish-American guitarist who devoted himself to Miles Davis, first as his roadie and assistant, and then as one of his most trusted road managers, Miles to Go is a frank and intimate exploration of Davis's eccentric working life, drug habits, paranoia, depression, and subsequent recovery. The New Miles Davis Quintet $11.98 Although they had made a few slightly earlier cuts that would later be issued on Columbia, the first full-length album by the Miles Davis Quintet is quite intriguing in that it gives one a look at tenor saxophonist John Coltrane when he still had a hesitant style. This audiophile CD reissue has the same music that is currently available on an Original Jazz Classics set: five jazz standards plus "The Theme." Unlike Coltrane, who would develop rapidly within the next year, Miles was already very much in his prime, sounding quite lyrical on "Just Squeeze Me" and "There Is No Greater Love," and the classic rhythm section (pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones) was quickly starting to gel. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Paul Chambers - Bass, Bass (Upright); Alice Coltrane - Piano; John Coltrane - Sax (Tenor); Miles Davis - Trumpet; Red Garland - Piano; Philly Joe Jones - Drums |

40,000 Miles Around the World $32.46 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER IV. YOKOHOMA. We arrived at Yokhoma early on the morning of the 25th of Feb. and it was an interesting sight to see this magnificant harbor with its extensive shipping, the town along the bay in the distance and beyond, that fine old mountain Fuiyama with its snow capped top, that is so familiar in all Japanese pictures and works of art. Yokohoma is a very progressive, new, live commercial city of about three hundred thousand population with a fine harbor, and breakwater newly built, and the government has just finished one long wharf, and is building another, where vessels can bo loaded eight or ten at a time directly from the cars, when we tied up at this fine dock, a Japanese band on the wharf, as well as the band on the ship was playing, and quite a large crowd was on the wharf to greet us. The preliminary custom and health examinations having been gone through we were permitted to land. The large party was. divided up into .smaller ones to go on the various side trips which we were to take from Yokohoma, being to Tokio, the capital about twenty miles away, Kamakura the old capital with the great bronze statue of Daibutsu their Buddha or God and the pretty beach about thirty miles away, and to Nikko one hundred and sixty miles away, where nearly all the great temples of Japan seem to be situated and is the summer resort of the capital, it being nestled among the beautiful mountains of Japan, and is always delightfully cool in the summer evenings. Parties were kept coming and going from and to all these places all the following week until everybody had been at each place. There were ten directors with Mr. Clark on the ship, and about thirty well informed Japanese guides, who could speak English, some of both were with every party. On the wharf the party was m... |

Miles in the Sky [Bonus Tracks] $8 With the 1968 album Miles in the Sky, Miles Davis explicitly pushed his second great quintet away from conventional jazz, pushing them toward the jazz-rock hybrid that would later become known as fusion. Here, the music is still in its formative stages, and it's a little more earth-bound than you might expect, especially following on the heels of the shape-shifting, elusive Nefertiti. On Miles in the Sky, much of the rhythms are straightforward, picking up on the direct 4/4 beats of rock, and these are illuminated by Herbie Hancock's electric piano -- one of the very first sounds on the record, as a matter of fact -- and the guest appearance of guitarist George Benson on "Paraphernalia." All of these additions are tangible and identifiable, and they do result in intriguing music, but the form of the music itself is surprisingly direct, playing as extended grooves. This meanders considerable more than Nefertiti, even if it is significantly less elliptical in its form, because it's primarily four long jams. Intriguing, successful jams in many respects, but even with the notable additions of electric instruments, and with the deliberately noisy "Country Son," this is less visionary than its predecessor and feels like a transitional album -- and, like many transitional albums, it's intriguing and frustrating in equal measures. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: George Benson - Guitar, Guitar (Electric); Ron Carter - Bass; Miles Davis - Trumpet; Herbie Hancock - Piano, Piano (Electric); Wayne Shorter - Sax (Tenor); Tony Williams - Drums |

Riding Alone For Thousands of Miles $13.46 Ken Takakura (THE YAKUZA) gives a career-redefining performance as an old fisherman in RIDING ALONE FOR THOUSANDS OF MILES. Estranged from his son for many years, Gou-ichi (Takakura) receives an unexpected call from his daughter-in-law, Rie (Shinobu Terajima), asking him to come to Tokyo to visit his son, Ken-ichi (Kiichi Nakai), who is in the hospital suffering from a stomach ailment. Gou-ichi decides to make the trip against his better judgment, but when he arrives, his son refuses to see him as he is still bearing the scars of the unspoken reasons why they were torn apart. Determined to reunite them, Rie gives Gou-ichi a videotape of an article Ken-ichi wrote about Li Jiamin, a Chinese folk opera master from Yunnan Province. Ken-ichi had promised Li that he would come back and film him performing Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles, an opera based on one of the stories in the literary classic ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS; Gou-ichi makes it his mission to travel to southern China, find Li, and film the performance himself. With the help of tour guides Lingo (Qiu Lin) and Jasmine (Jiang Wen)--and a fabulous interval with young Yang Yang (Yang Zhenbo)--Gou-ichi takes off to the great unknown, trying to do right by the son who still appears to hate him. Takakura plays the old man with a quiet, dignified demeanor, moving slowly and barely speaking at all. Zhang Yimou (HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, RAISE THE RED LANTERN) directs the film simply and beautifully, allowing the fascinating characters and compelling story to develop at a natural, alluring pace. This very different kind of road picture is sincere and emotional, with a playful sense of humor. Be sure to bring plenty of hankies. |

Two Thousand Miles on Horseback $15.82 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: LETTER V. Banks Of The River Platte, ) (Thirty-four miles W. of Plum Creek,) Nebraska Territory, June 13, 1866. '. We to-day passed very near the spot designated by acts of Congress as the point where the various lines of railroad intended to reach the Pacific Ocean must concentrate; the exclusive privileges of the remainder of the route to be accorded to the one first at that point with a completed road. The place designated is at the intersection of the one hundreth meridian of longitude and the Republican Fork of the Kansas. From all I can learn, the railroad from Omaha appears to have, in point of time, what is called the inside track; but whether its want of connection east of Omaha may, or not, prejudice its claim, I am not sufficiently familiar with the act of Congress to decide. The Indian name of this stream is Nebraska, ? the Shallow River, ? but it is now universally called the Platte. The etymology of the word Platte, given inmy last, is the one adopted in Nebraska, the river being so called, they say, from the fact that it plats out the islands and its banks, in its rapid and erratic course. The derivation appears to me far-fetched and forced. Without knowing it positively ? for I have never heard it suggested ? I feel ETYMOLOGY. ? BEAUTIFUL SCENERY. 25 almost certain that the name of Platte was given it as follows: ? The boatmen and hunters who accompanied the early explorers, were Canadian voyageurs and cou- reurs des bois and after some hundreds of miles' experience of the river, spreading indefinitely in width, with low, level banks, scarcely a foot or two higher than the stream, they must inevitably have exclaimed, Dieu ! qw'elle est done plate, cette riviere ! The word plate, repeated in English, was necessarily spelled with two... |
