Principal vocalist Stokely has good presence, projects sincerity and earnestness on love songs, and reflects Stevie Wonder`s influence. The backing vocals, arrangements, lyrics and production style aren`t overloaded with electronics, strings or any other devices, and they balance a traditional soul sensibility with a 1990s approach. Several numbers are enjoyable, although none are overpowering or remarkable. Well, perhaps in spirit, but there`s not much evidence of Zep here. No, the orientation is funk, plain and simple: mostly slow-tempo, mostly ballads, with a few straight-up dance-floor jams thrown in. In other words, you may shake your butt, but you will shake it sloooowly. There are jazz inflections throughout, as well as some beautiful ballads (see the fine slow jam "You Don`t Have to Hurt No More").Most of all, though, these guys can flat out play--and flat out sing. The musicianship on Mint Condition`s third album is first-rate throughout, and the ambitious, multi-layered vocal arrangements are a true aural pleasure. Lead vocalist Stokley seems to have molded his style as a combination of current romantic balladeers. Mint Condition - Livin` The Luxury Brown $15.52 This release includes a bonus DVD.Mint Condition: Ricky (vocals, guitar, bass guitar, programming); Stokley (vocals, slide guitar, Clavinet, keyboards, synthesizer, bass guitar, drums, steel pan, percussion); O`Dell (guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, programming); Jeffrey (tenor saxophone, keyboards, background vocals); Lawrence (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, organ, keyboards).Amidst a flood of soulful early-1990s groups that offered up dulcet vocal harmonies (Jodeci, Shai, etc.), Mint Condition rose to prominence with the R&B/pop crossover hit "Breakin` My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)." Over a decade later, when many of those acts had folded or faded into obscurity, Mint Condition stayed strong with five of its original six members intact for 2005`s LIVIN` THE LUXURY BROWN. The Minneapolis group survived because they were more than a paint-by-numbers R&B ensemble; they played together for years before their break, and reflected influences ranging from jazz legend Oscar Peterson to Funkadelic to the Delfonics.Over 20 years into their career, Mint Condition still serve up funky, inspired concoctions (mixed with the occasional unrestrained ballad) on LIVIN` THE LUXURY BROWN. The first single, "I`m Ready," hearkens back to their aforementioned hit, before bleeding into the aching "Love Your Tears." On the `80s-era New Jack Swing-style "Luxury Brown," the group evens lays down a Parliament-like guitar interlude.
