Clean $17.98 This release will be obstinately viewed as Astralwerks foray into the hyper-trendy electro-clash scene. And the first two songs on Cosmo Vitelli's second album Clean make a strong case for this misperception as they lock onto the singsong Europop reminiscent of Pet Shop Boys if only Felix da Housecat had done their analog synth programming. Mercifully, the Frenchman has little use for stark calculated vocals that plague most cookie cutter releases of this sub-genre, instead allowing for a more traditional pop approach. But beyond the opening volley, there is very little to suggest any sort of band-wagon jumping by Vitelli. At least, not onto any current bandwagons. "Perfect Lies" and "People Should Think, Machines Should Work" echo the wispy funk of Air, while the guitar meets bubblegum beat of "Alias" could be coming straight from Justin Timberlake. Whether or not this is a good thing depends on if you have the ironic sensibility to acknowledge pop as musically more than MTV fodder. The album closes with the drifting "The Sleep Lab," which barely rises above some angel hair sound effects. Certainly not the sort of thing that fashionistas or radio-programmers jump on. Listeners either felt Common was picking up fresh, new inspirations, or that he was just being distracted by a whole lot of ill-fitting nonsense. With Be, it seems the MC has realized that not every album that's sprawling and eclectic is as good as Electric Ladyland or Songs in the Key of Life. More notably, he might've been struck with the fact that a high percentage of excellent albums are around 40 minutes in length and are built on a unified sound. Be is highly concentrated, containing 11 songs and involving two producers and a small number of guests. It's a 180 degree turn from Electric Circus, and in a bizarre way it's both a progression and a back-to-basics move. Kanye West and Dilla are key to the album's steadiness, rooting the sound in '70s soul and soul-jazz. That's no shakeup, but the two producers deserve some form of award for stringing together a consistent sequence of productions that is never monotonous, dull, or all that flashy. Even lead single "The Corner," heard well before Be's release, falls into the fabric of the album on first listen, as if that were where it belonged all along. Lyrically, Common comes back down to Earth -- the narratives are sharp as ever, the gripes are more like observations than screeds, and the eccentricities need to be teased out rather than swatted away. Be isn't likely to be referred to by anyone as groundbreaking, but it's one of Common's best, and it's also one of the most tightly constructed albums of any form within recent memory. The Very Best of Death Row [Clean] $13.58 Released nearly a decade after the two-disc Death Row's Greatest Hits, the single-disc Very Best of Death Row is both somewhat necessary and a little bizarre. It's could be meant to right some wrongs of the earlier compilation (wisely including the original mix of Dr. Dre's "Let Me Ride" and Warren G's "Regulate"), or it's a roundabout way to welcome Petey Pablo to the fold (his "Off tha Chain," featuring Kurupt, closes out the disc as a bonus track). It's definitely not a complementary release, since it shares a number of the tracks with its predecessor. No matter what, this compilation shortchanges both the label and the consumer; there's no way that these 14 tracks (at just over an hour), as a whole, can make for the best representation of one of the most notorious rap labels. Pimpalation [Clean] $18.98 Since Pimp C entered prison in early 2002, his UGK brother Bun B unwillingly launched a solo career with the heavy-hitting 2005 album Trill and the fantastic single "Draped Up." It was a more mainstream affair than anything UGK had ever attempted, and the fans who were disappointed by Bun B going bling are going to be even more bitter after hearing Pimpalation, an album that makes no grand statements but bangs hard with numerous club cuts. Easing listeners off the righteous "Free Pimp C" campaign mania that led up to the album's release, the great Tom Petty-sampling "I'm Free" thanks the fans for waiting and addresses lockdown and release. Hot on its heels, the hard and very UGK "Knockin' Doorz Down" attempts to unite the South while announcing the Pimp's return to the game. From here, it's forget about the past and get back to work. "Pourin' Up" is the little brother to Bun B's "Draped Up," although it's Pimp C, so it's more aggressive, brasher, and extra sleazy. A ridiculous amount of hooky tracks with an even more ridiculous amount of guest stars -- shades of Trill once again -- follow with Pimp C dropping the more hedonistic side of Houston culture all over tracks like the sly "Bobby & Whitney." This is a party, so those who expect a storytelling prison album like Beanie Sigel's The B.Coming are in for a big letdown. Their loss, but thuggish Friday nights that crave that syrup sippin' Texas noise rarely have it so good. This is very direct and physical party music, with lots of slang-filled phrasings that might not have any more meaning than "The roof is on fire!" or "Dizzouble dizzutch!" to Americans. It's music that is conducive to dancing or doing other carefree things in the sunshine, rather than what you should hear most often through feeble computer speakers in dimly lit rooms. So why bother discussing it at all? Well, below the surface is a lot more than anyone's basic idea of a good time. The blend of styles -- a dense, often chaotic collage of garage from the U.K., dancehall from Jamaica, crunk from the Dirty South, electro and hardcore rap from New York, and glints of a few others -- is unique enough to baffle anyone who dares categorize it. Beats crack concrete in whomping blasts and scramble senses in exotic patterns; flurries of percussive noise, synthetic handclaps, and synth jabs add chaos; exuberant vocals are delivered in a manner that will be frequently unintelligible to a lot of ears. More importantly, once all the layers of rhythm and accents are peeled away, you'll hear that Maya Arulpragasam -- the London-based woman of Sri Lankan origin who, along with a host of fellow producers, is behind the album -- has a lot more on her mind and in her past than fun, even when she's only alluding to the violence and strife her people have endured. The images that adorn the cover of the album aren't present merely for the sake of design, either; the tanks aren't a nod to the No Limit label. Konvicted [Clean] $13.99 "Locked Up"'s success provided Akon with instant heavyweight clout. Upgraded from writing songs and doing the occasional hook for B-, C-, and D-level artists, he tallied a multi-platinum album, was granted his own boutique label (which was used to spawn T-Pain), and became in-demand as an A-list collaborator -- he worked with Young Jeezy, R. Kelly, Gwen Stefani, and even Elton John. His second album, Konvicted, isn't much different from the debut (patchiness included), even though it comes from a different perspective. He even addresses his newfound fame, along with the expectations and other forms of grief that come with it, in a vague but very saddened way throughout "The Rain." For the most part, though, Konvicted offers more ultra-macho R&B. The guest spots come from Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Styles P, leaving no room for female hooks or verses. Akon hits on strippers (but does not fall in love with them), smacks behinds, and tends to go with what suits him best: bragging and seducing while delivering like-sounding hooks in his unique voice. Whenever the yearning and heartache is allowed through, he's not persuasive, and he sounds like he still has the club on his mind. Naked [Clean] $13.95 Whenever an album is titled Naked, the odds are pretty strong that it's the second or third release from a young solo artist who wants to get personal: "I wanted to give my fans a more intimate look at who I am"; "I called this album Naked because I'm not ashamed of my emotions"; "I just went through a lot of drama, and I'm an adult now, so these songs are very deep as a result." In Marques Houston's case -- a solo artist with a debut behind him -- the odds are pretty strong that he means "naked" in the physical sense, not the emotional sense. Naked is no deeper than 2003's MH, which most of his fans will find perfectly acceptable. It offers a similar mix of earnest slow jams and sexually frank club tracks. The best moments involve adequate production facsimiles of Just Blaze ("12 O'Clock"'s marching band punch), Kanye West (the blissful "All Because of You," laced with a smart Whispers sample), and the Neptunes ("Something Else," where Houston's falsetto is more Michael Jackson than Pharrell Williams). Another thing that works to Houston's benefit is the shorter running time: Naked's 11 songs are a lot easier to digest than MH's 17, which also means that there's better quality control.
