Clean $11.98 A firsthand look at what it meansâ??and what it takesâ??for young addicts to get clean and stay clean "To suddenly think, â??Hey, wait a minute, I’m 21. I just got sober. I can’t drink like all my friends ever again?’ I remember thinking my whole life had crumbled." Welcome to recovery from a young addict’s perspective. Written by MTV’s Chris Beckman with contributions from dozens of teens and twentysomethings in recovery, Clean is part autobiography, part addiction and recovery primer, and part wake-up call about what’s really going on in schools, cars, malls, and wherever else kids come in contact with drugs and alcohol. Beckman, whose out-of-control drinking and drugging lasted more than a decade before he got sober at age 24, uses his story to illustrate the book’s fundamental message that recovery at a young age is very different from recovery in adulthood. "We get clean at 20 and feel like we’re still 13 emotionally," he writes. Clean is the real thing: an honest, nonjudgmental, peer-to-peer lifeline for young people thinking about experimenting with drugs, for those who are already experimenting or those who are already addicted, and for families and friends who want to understand and help. |

Playlist: The Very Best of Sir Mix-A-Lot [Clean] $8.98 For most intents and purposes, Playlist is the first Sir Mix-A-Lot compilation ever released, as the 2000 collection Beepers, Benzos & Booty never got wide circulation, and while it's missing a fair share of his charting singles, it's nevertheless a solid overview. Chances are most listeners won't miss "Iron Man," "I Got Game," "Jump on It," "One Time's Got No Case," and "Ride" -- all entries on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles charts and all missing here -- because this has "Baby Got Back" (in a clean "Rock Mix"), "My Hooptie," "Beepers," and two versions of "Posse on Broadway," along with a good selection of album tracks, all adding up to a representative cross section of Sir Mix-A-Lot's American recordings that serves as both a sampler and introduction. Clean Water $23.98 "Clean Water" is a book for anyone who is concerned about this precious resource and wants to become better informed. In straightforward language, Kenneth Vigil provides a comprehensive introduction to the many scientific, regulatory, and geographic issues associated with water quality and water pollution control. Most other books on water quality and pollution control are highly technical and very specific, and are aimed at engineers, scientists, or attorneys. "Clean Water," on the other hand, is a comprehensive discussion of the subject intended for a wider audience of science students, educators, and concerned citizens. Using photos and diagrams to illustrate and explain concepts, Vigil provides sufficient detail to educate readers about many broad topics and includes additional references at the end of each chapter for exploring specific topics in more detail. "Clean Water" summarizes the basic fundamentals of water chemistry and microbiology and outlines important water quality rules and regulations, all in concise, understandable prose. It describes the basic scientific principles behind water pollution control and the broader approach of addressing water pollution problems through watershed management. There are sections on drinking water and a concluding chapter entitled "Getting Personal about Clean Water" about citizen involvement at home and in the community. |

Pimpalation [Clean] $18.98 Since Pimp C entered prison in early 2002, his UGK brother Bun B unwillingly launched a solo career with the heavy-hitting 2005 album Trill and the fantastic single "Draped Up." It was a more mainstream affair than anything UGK had ever attempted, and the fans who were disappointed by Bun B going bling are going to be even more bitter after hearing Pimpalation, an album that makes no grand statements but bangs hard with numerous club cuts. Easing listeners off the righteous "Free Pimp C" campaign mania that led up to the album's release, the great Tom Petty-sampling "I'm Free" thanks the fans for waiting and addresses lockdown and release. Hot on its heels, the hard and very UGK "Knockin' Doorz Down" attempts to unite the South while announcing the Pimp's return to the game. From here, it's forget about the past and get back to work. "Pourin' Up" is the little brother to Bun B's "Draped Up," although it's Pimp C, so it's more aggressive, brasher, and extra sleazy. A ridiculous amount of hooky tracks with an even more ridiculous amount of guest stars -- shades of Trill once again -- follow with Pimp C dropping the more hedonistic side of Houston culture all over tracks like the sly "Bobby & Whitney." This is a party, so those who expect a storytelling prison album like Beanie Sigel's The B.Coming are in for a big letdown. Their loss, but thuggish Friday nights that crave that syrup sippin' Texas noise rarely have it so good. [Pimpalation was also made available in a clean version, with all explicit material removed.] ~ David Jeffries, Rovi |

Naked [Clean] $13.95 Whenever an album is titled Naked, the odds are pretty strong that it's the second or third release from a young solo artist who wants to get personal: "I wanted to give my fans a more intimate look at who I am"; "I called this album Naked because I'm not ashamed of my emotions"; "I just went through a lot of drama, and I'm an adult now, so these songs are very deep as a result." In Marques Houston's case -- a solo artist with a debut behind him -- the odds are pretty strong that he means "naked" in the physical sense, not the emotional sense. Naked is no deeper than 2003's MH, which most of his fans will find perfectly acceptable. It offers a similar mix of earnest slow jams and sexually frank club tracks. The best moments involve adequate production facsimiles of Just Blaze ("12 O'Clock"'s marching band punch), Kanye West (the blissful "All Because of You," laced with a smart Whispers sample), and the Neptunes ("Something Else," where Houston's falsetto is more Michael Jackson than Pharrell Williams). Another thing that works to Houston's benefit is the shorter running time: Naked's 11 songs are a lot easier to digest than MH's 17, which also means that there's better quality control. Konvicted [Clean] $13.99 "Locked Up"'s success provided Akon with instant heavyweight clout. Upgraded from writing songs and doing the occasional hook for B-, C-, and D-level artists, he tallied a multi-platinum album, was granted his own boutique label (which was used to spawn T-Pain), and became in-demand as an A-list collaborator -- he worked with Young Jeezy, R. Kelly, Gwen Stefani, and even Elton John. His second album, Konvicted, isn't much different from the debut (patchiness included), even though it comes from a different perspective. He even addresses his newfound fame, along with the expectations and other forms of grief that come with it, in a vague but very saddened way throughout "The Rain." For the most part, though, Konvicted offers more ultra-macho R&B. The guest spots come from Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Styles P, leaving no room for female hooks or verses. Akon hits on strippers (but does not fall in love with them), smacks behinds, and tends to go with what suits him best: bragging and seducing while delivering like-sounding hooks in his unique voice. Whenever the yearning and heartache is allowed through, he's not persuasive, and he sounds like he still has the club on his mind. The Cool [Clean] $18.98 Fully understanding the details of the concept spread across The Cool, first introduced on Food and Liquor's "He Say/She Say" and "The Cool," may only happen after pointing a Lupe Fiasco decoder ring toward Chicago during the vernal equinox, but the synopsis is simple: a fatherless boy is raised by supernatural characterizations of the streets (named the Streets, not to be confused with Mike Skinner) and the game (named the Game, not to be confused with Jayceon Taylor), squanders his potential, becomes motivated by greed, turns to dealing drugs, gets caught up on a few levels. A key piece to understanding the details is "Pills," an "I Gotcha" B-side that can also be found on some non-U.S. copies of Food and Liquor and the MTV2 My Block: Chicago compilation. Coming from an ambitious MC who is only on album two and considering retirement due to various forms of dissatisfaction -- including what the actual streets and the actual game have done to hip-hop -- The Cool has a kind of set-up that may provoke some involuntary tedium preparedness. Lupe incorporates the hyper-expressive, pincushion-sensitive male rock voice wherever it is feasible. (The appearances that come from female voices are much more affecting.) Ditto modern quasi-symphonic soft rock, sometimes toughened up by pensive, churning guitars. Ditto dramatics laid on so thickly that they tend to take a turn toward the acutely melodramatic -- and on this album, strings and other drama signifiers are nearly as integral as the beats beneath them. Even considering the over-abundance of elaboration on all fronts, it's a credit to Lupe that he has made an album that cannot be processed after one or two listens, and if you have the time, its inscrutability turns into mere complexity. (And it turns out that, at the very most, only a third of the album is conceptual, even though it looks and initially sounds like it.) He is one of the most clever artists around, and as far as telling stories with rhymes goes, he's way up there, best exemplified by "Hip-Hop Saved My Life" (a gripping story about a struggling rapper) and "Gotta Eat" (where Lupe's inspiration for metaphors is a cheeseburger, yet it is no more corny than Main Source's classic "Just a Friendly Game of Baseball"). For anyone opposed to their own perception of Lupe Fiasco -- the always-thinking, always-plotting, uptight moralist brainiac, for instance -- The Cool will sound like meandering, overblown prog-rap that is far less tolerable than Food and Liquor. For anyone sick of hearing MCs who boast about themselves (which is akin to taking a stance against R&B songs about love, but whatever), The Cool will sound like a major artistic triumph. It's somewhere in between. [A clean version of the album was also made available.] ~ Andy Kellman, RoviPerformers: Pablo Clements - Vocals (Background); |

Humanure [Clean] $11.98 Since their inception in the mid-'90s, Cattle Decapitation have been consistently written off as a side project of the Locust (lineup changes have squashed that connection), or a gore-obsessed novelty act (can't a band have a sense of humor, albeit a pitch-black one, without being stuck with this tag?). Humanure changes all that, though. On the surface, it's not very different from To Serve Man or Homovore: gore-minded hardcore punks playing a brutal fusion of grindcore and metal. The difference here is in the playing, and in the higher level of songwriting in general. New to CD is drummer Michael Laughlin, who also plays in "political metal conceptualists" (really) Creation Is Crucifixion, and his impact on the band is immediate. Former tub-thumper David Astor was a great hardcore drummer, but Laughlin is clearly a metal drummer of higher technical ability and that, more than anything, has allowed CD to blossom into something more than an also-ran. Laughlin is just part of the puzzle here, though, as is veteran producer Bill Metoyer, who -- along with the band -- went for a cleaner sound more typical of European metal bands. Standout tracks include "Lips & Assholes," "Bukkake Tsunami," and (surprisingly) the indulgent closing soundscape, "Men Before Swine" -- a collage of pig squeals, rattling metal, and swirling hiss, it's not something that all metal fans will like but ultimately it's indicative of just how comfortable CD are right now, because noise has been an interest for all of these guys all along in their other projects (e.g., Uum), and it's nice to see them owning up to it here. [Humanure is also available in a "clean" version bereft of foul language.] ~ Wade Kergan, All Music GuidePerformers: Travis Ryan - E-Bow, Vocals; Bobby Bray - Vocals (Background); Justin Pearson - Vocals (Background); Gabe Serbian - Vocals (Background); Josh Elmore - Guitar; Michael Laughlin - Drums; Troy Oftedal - Bass, Guitar, Guitar (Bass) |

Sweat [Clean] $13.98 Nelly's decision to release his Sweatsuit project as two respective albums, Sweat and Suit -- the former clubby and insincere, the latter refined and mannered -- is somewhat of a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it's nice to pick whichever side of Nelly's persona you prefer, whether in general or at any particular moment; on the other hand, the separate-album concept makes for two very one-dimensional albums that begin to sound formulaic by their respective conclusions. The thing is, Nelly has plenty of great songs here on these two albums. Quality certainly isn't an issue -- he works with a who's who of pop-rap circa 2004, from the Neptunes to Christina Aguilera to Snoop Dogg to Missy Elliott, and ends up with a wealth of certified and could-be hits. Yet by sorting them into two different categories and then lumping them together onto two separate CDs, the diversity at hand is nullified. Granted, this two-styles, two-discs approach worked well for OutKast on Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (and less well, but well nonetheless, for R. Kelly on Happy People/U Saved Me), but it doesn't work so well for Nelly. His Sweatsuit recordings are diverse, for sure, but OutKast he isn't, nor is he the Pied Piper. Rather, Nelly is essentially a pop star who happens to rap, and as such, he specializes in calculated pop formulas -- namely clubby, cocky party songs (previously "Hot in Herre," presently "Flap Your Wings") and sweet, sultry love songs (previously "Dilemma," presently "My Place"). And by sorting those two formulas into respective albums, the calculation becomes overt and comes across as formulaic to discerning listeners. The key, then, is to not be a discerning listener: it's best to just let these songs play and take them for what they are -- well-done popcraft. The Sweat disc in particular features, at least, a half-dozen songs that could be smash hits, whether on radio, on MTV, or in clubs: "Na-Nana-Na," "Flap Your Wings," "Tilt Ya Head Back," "Grand Hang Out," "Playa," and "Boy" are all first-rate party rap, on a par with anything else out there on the market in 2004. The others are above average also, resulting in a damn impressive lineup of songs. But they're all distinctly clubby and therefore get a little tiring after a while. It'd be nice to have some steamy slow jams interspersed throughout, if only for the sake of variety, not to mention an occasional (heavy) breather. Still, good music is good music, and Nelly comes up a winner here on Sweat. In no shape or manner is this disc a disappointment -- it lives up to its billing and then some. Had Nelly blended these songs with those of Suit into a double-disc buffet or, better yet, cherry-picked them for a single-disc bouquet, he'd have a truly amazing album. (Doing just that on your PC or Mac is highly recommended, by the way, and quite fun.) Certified [Clean] $13.98 The money rolls in, the inspiration drains out. It happens to a lot of artists. David Banner, however, does not fall into that camp. Now that he knows he has a lot of people paying attention, built on the popularity of Mississippi: The Album and MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water, he's more fired up and outspoken than ever, fearlessly and descriptively expressing the rage he feels for the way his people have been treated throughout history, whether the events went down centuries or weeks ago. (Needless to say, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, going down as he was promoting this album, must be giving him loads of thoughts and feelings to work through for his next release.) As on his past albums, Banner has all the bases covered, so there's also plenty of material to soundtrack an orgy of any variety, and even those moments are intense and sound like very pointed protest songs. Every other chorus seems to be have been written for a mob of some kind, while the production work -- handled mostly by Banner, along with contributions from Jazze Pha, Lil Jon, Maestro, Get Cool, and a couple others -- takes on a number of dimensions without making for a disjointed listen. If Certified has one problem, it's the overabundance of features that eats up too much time. Banner could hold down every aspect of an album on his own, no problem, so all the guest spots show that he's actually the one being supportive. Scanning the list -- from Lil Boosie to Talib Kweli, from Jagged Edge to Too Short -- also demonstrates his range rather than desperation to appeal across styles and ideologies. If the album has a second problem, it's that "Play" is a little too similar to the Ying Yang Twins' "Wait (The Whisper Song)" (also produced by Michael "ColliPark" Crooms), even if it's no less amazing, fitted with screwed-and-chopped sirens and frenzied electronic squiggles (and with that, Ludacris' "Splash Waterfalls" is almost completely erased from existence). Certified certifies that Banner is as crucial to hip-hop in the early 2000s as any other MC. Whether in conscious mode or not, he's at the top, and he's taking all his family and friends with him to celebrate. Issues [Clean] $7.98 Released in the fall of 1999, when Korn were in danger of being overshadowed by such protégés as Limp Bizkit, Issues reaffirms the group's status as alt-metal leaders, illustrating that the true difference between Korn and their imitators is their mastery of sound. Korn are about nothing if not sound. Sure, Jonathan Davis doesn't merely toss off lyrics, but in the end, it doesn't matter since his voice and the various words that float to the surface simply enhance the mood. Similarly, the band doesn't really have any distinguished riffs or hooks -- everything each member contributes adds to the overall sound -- so, casual listeners can be forgiven if they think the songs sound the same, since not only do the tracks bleed into one other, the individual songs have no discernible high points. Each cut rises from the same dark sonic murk, occasionally surging forward with volume, power, and aggression. It's mood music -- songs don't matter, but the foreboding feeling and gloomy sounds do. To a certain extent, this has always been true of Korn albums, but it's particularly striking on Issues because they pull off a nifty trick of stripping their sound back to its bare essentials and expanding and rebuilding from that. They've decided to leave rap-metal to the likes of Limp Bizkit, since there is very little rapping or appropriation of hip-hop culture anywhere on Issues. By doing this, they have re-emphasized their skill as a band, and how they can find endless, often intriguing, variations on their core sound. Issues may not be the cathartic blast of anger their debut was, nor is it as adventurous as Follow the Leader, but it better showcases the sheer raw power of the band than either. [In conjunction with MTV, Korn held a "Korn Cover Contest" prior to the release of Issues, asking fans to design the cover for the album. While there was only one winner -- a drawing of a worn-out rag doll, missing an eye and suffering from a gashed torso, designed by Alfredo Carlos -- the three other finalists (Vince Quequ, Jamil "Phoenix" Clarke, and Brad Lambert) were honored with limited-edition runs of their covers. Hence, there were four covers of Issues upon its initial release, along with a "clean" version of the record that contained no profanities or vulgarities.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: Jonathan Davis - Bagpipes, Drums (Snare); David Silveria - Drums (Snare); Fieldy - Guitar; Head - Guitar; Munky - Guitar |
